Part 5: Bet on the Bass

Editor’s Note: Dennis Braun of Vermilion, Ohio, fishes for everything that swims. That’s why he uses Mepps and Mister Twister products because Mepps spinners and Mister Twister soft plastics will catch just about every fish that swims. “I haven’t had a chance to try them on whales and minnows, but I’m convinced that if they could see Mepps spinners and Mister Twister soft plastics and could get them in their mouths, they’d eat them.” He fishes quite a bit on Leesville Lake (near New Philadelphia), Clear Fork Reservoir (near Mansfield), Rocky Fork Lake (in Hillsboro) and Pymatuning (in Andover) with Mepps spinners and Mister Twister soft plastics.

Question: What lures do you like to fish for largemouth bass with in your area?

Braun: When I’m fishing for bass, I like to use the No. 4 or No. 5 single-hook Mepps Black Fury spinner. It has a black blade with yellow spots. I fish the Mepps Black Fury around weed edges and the edges of logs, because these are natural ambush points where you almost always will find bass. Once again, I like to fish the Mepps Black Fury really slowly, but water clarity determines the speed of my retrieve. In clear water, I’ll speed-up my retrieve, but in muddy water, I want to retrieve it as slowly as I can swim it. Although the majority of the bass I catch are 14- to 17-inches long, I have caught a 6-1/2-pound largemouth, which is a good fish for Ohio.

Question: What’s a good day of bass fishing?

Braun: We’re really happy if we catch three to seven good-sized largemouths in about 4 hours of fishing. I feel sure I could catch more bass if I fished longer, but you know, if I fish for 4 hours in the morning, take a break and fish 4 hours in the afternoon, that’s an 8-hour day. I could get in more fishing time by fishing in the middle of the day, but the fishing then generally isn’t as good as fishing in the morning or the evening. But on many lakes that I fish, we can fish for more than one species on the same lake in the same day. So, I can have a good day of fishing almost any day I want to go.

I’ve been fishing with Mepps and Mister Twister now for a long time and I’ve found that these two companies meet just about all my fishing needs. So far, I haven’t found any fish I can’t catch with products from one of these companies.
