I was wading a small lake in northern Michigan at dusk fishing for perch with small jigs and live bait. When I was done I decided to throw some artificial lures to see if I could hook onto anything bigger. I tried a few crankbaits, then went to a brand new Mepps Black Fury #1 with Yellow Dots. I gave it 10 casts - on the 9th I threw it out there and counted to 7. Shortly into my retrieval something hit the lure and started stripping line. I felt like Quint in Jaws fighting that fish for what felt like 10 minutes (so probably 2) on 6 pound mono with a 6 pound flouro leader. My net was in the car but I still managed to land it.
I've had fantastic luck in Michigan catching Largemouth Bass and Pike with various sized Mepps. I seem to catch Bass with the smaller Mepps and Pike with the larger Mepps.
