Smallmouth Bass Testimonials

Patrick Swinger – Lake Namakagon, Wisconsin

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Musky - Pike, Northern

My fishing buddy and I have fished Lake Namakagon in northern Wisconsin for the last three years. We started using the Aglia pink platinum/pink #5 spinner the first year we were there. My buddy caught a 35 inch musky using it, and this past year he caught a 45 incher. We have caught numerous northern pike and smallmouth bass on this lure. We have great confidence with this lure. It works better than any other lure we have used. No lie.

Bill Friggle – Pennsylvania

Lure: Black Fury

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Carp - Crappie (Black) - Crappie (White) - Perch, Yellow - Pickerel - Sunfish (shellcracker) - Trout, Rainbow

I have been fishing Mepps lures since I was a kid. I'm 58 now. I used to only use Black Fury's in muddy water. But one time I went fishing and the water was clear. But I already had a Black Fury tied on. So I decided to fish it a while before changing it. First cast, bam. Nice largemouth. Third cast, another. And I continued catching fish. Needless to say, I never changed the lure to an Aglia that day. Since then I have been using the Black Fury's a lot more. I think it is my most productive Mepps. My favorite is Fluorescent Red. Second is pink. I don't have any white yet, but I think they would be great as well. If you aren't fishing Black Fury's, you are missing out.

Paul Evon – Michigan, Michigan

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bass, White - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (Black) - Perch, Yellow - Pike, Northern - Sunfish (shellcracker) - Catfish, Bullhead (brown, yellow & black)

I have 35 Mepps spinners in my arsenal. Most of them are the Aglia and mostly red and white. I have every size they manufacture (0-5). I have had more luck with these Mepps spinners than any other lure that I have ever used in my over 45 years of fishing. I will be fishing in channels (cuts) with other fisherman around and I am the only one reeling in the fish. They all ask me what's my secret and I just tell them #3 Mepps and they start reeling in the fish. Mepps is a secret weapon in my arsenal. My motto is: if the fish ain't biting on Mepps spinners, then they ain't going to bite here all day. The main sizes I use are #1, #2, and #3. I will use #4 and #5 in the bigger open waters. You can also use #0 and #1 as flies. The Agila's are so versatile you can determine how deep or shallow you want to fish with these lures. Its winter now in Michigan so I am assessing my lure inventory for the coming fishing season. See you all on the fishing waters in 2025!

Alden Stobb – Milwaukee River, Wisconsin

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth - Musky - Pike, Northern

I have been fishing with Mepps Aglia Spinners as long as I have fished on the Milwaukee River and caught everything from bass to muskie. I have nothing but great things to say about all Mepps products.

James – Upper Mississippi River, Minnesota, Minnesota

Lure: Bronze Slammer

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth

Lives up to it's name!

Derek Combs – Middle Fork River Kentucky, Kentucky

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Rock - Bass, Smallmouth - Bass, White - Bluegill (Bream, Brim)

I am a river and creek fisherman. You better have a Mepps. All other in line spinners are no comparison. I've tried them all. Mepps are top notch and when you fish the rivers here you better have a spare because the smallmouth will break 10lbs test. Mepps is the # 1 lure!

John Tedrick – Bee Lake Ontario, Ontario , Canada

Lure: Bucktail Jig

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth - Pike, Northern - Walleye

On this Northwest Ontario Lake practically all of the fish caught for two days was on this ¼ oz brown over orange jig. A 38" pike, a personal best 30" walleye and two trophy smallies. Plus countless walleyes and smallmouths. At the end of two days a pike ruined what remained of this hair jig and I mourned that I didn't have an extra jig. This is a true multi-species lure. I'm returning next year and you know what I'm going back with.

Jeff – Northern Indiana, Indiana

Lure: Aglia Streamer

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluefish - Crappie (Black)

I have been a big Mepps fan for years. Have been throwing Black Fury's and the standard Aglia spinners for decades. This past spring I finally gave the Aglia Streamer a try. I have always been a little hesitant to purchase these because the biggest size is a size 3. But after reading the testimonials I decided to give it a try. I now know what all the fuss is about! This is an amazing lure. Never seen any other spinner that spins like this thing does. Amazing! Its great for clear water fishing for bass, crappies, and rock bass. I like the gold blade in the brown and rainbow trout. I own multiple of each in size 3. I still wish they would be offered in a larger size though. A size 4 or 5 would be great for pike and walleyes. Great lure!

Tim – Ocqueoc River, Michigan

Lure: Thunder Bug

Fish Caught: Bass, Rock - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (White) - Perch, Yellow - Salmon, Pink - Steelhead - Trout, Brook - Trout, Brown - Trout, Rainbow - Walleye

My all time favorite, the Mepps Thunder Bug White Miller in any weight. Been fishing Mepps since I was a kid over 50 years now. I lose them and replace them every so often, still the best lure in the market, hands down!

Matt Whitegiver – Downeast, Maine

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth - Perch, White - Salmon, Atlantic - Trout, Brook - Trout, Lake

I am a Master Maine guide and I own/operate Eagle Mountain Guide Service here in Downeast Maine & I love my Mepps.
Prior to ice out every year, I'm on the Mepps website building the lures I want for the upcoming season and get my order in.
Late Spring until the water reaches a certain temp, my sports are casting into the rocky shorelines with Mepps Aglias (Dressed and undressed).                                                It is my favorite time of the Smallmouth season. Slowly working rocky shorelines while my sports cast as close to shore as they can, all the while warning them not to get stuck in the rocks or trees. You have to get it moving the second it hits the water I tell them. Some master it, some don't. Those that don't and lose a lure or 2, wind up with a cheap Chinese spinner the rest of the day. Did I mention I love my Mepps?  Once the big Bass leave the shores for deeper water, I turn to the XD Aglia for a spell. A great lure to extend the spinner fishing a bit until it's time for top water lures and deep diving crank baits.Gotta love a Mepps...

Casey Poffenberger – River, Ponds, Ohio

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (White) - Catfish, Bullhead (brown, yellow & black)

I use all sorts of lures but I catch all of my fish on the Mepps Aglia #3 Dressed

Chris – Maine

Lure: Aglia-e

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth - Sunfish (shellcracker)

Picked up a couple of these in the 1/8oz size on a whim to add to my downsized/ ultralight smallmouth tackle.... Using the gold blade/ chartreuse color in murky river water on very warm late May day was the ticket. Smallmouth were destroying this and pretty much ignoring all my other offerings like small chatterbaits and ned rigs. I've always had a high opinion of Mepps as quality lures since using them during my youth in the 90's and I'll for sure be adding more of this particular spinner to my collection.

Kevin Hurley – Muskegon, Michigan

Lure: Little Wolf

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bass, White - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Bowfin - Catfish, Channel - Crappie (White) - Perch, Yellow - Trout, Brown

I spent 160 dollars to get the free hoodie that was offered for orders 150 dollars. First, the hoodie and hat are excellent quality. Absolutely love them. I grew up with a father that taught me Mepps are the best. I moved to an area that wasn't great for fishing without a boat and got big into catfishing on the bottom with live bait. Well, I moved back to Michigan and realized I needed to get back into lure fishing. I thought 150 dollars might be a little extreme, so I decided to catalog the fish I caught to see if the money was worth it. Here's where I'm at a month in fishing exclusively with my Mepps order:
52 large mouth bass
7 small mouth bass
27 bluegill
12 perch
4 white bass
5 channel cats (all over 8lbs and largest at 18lbs)
2 brown trout
5 bowfin
4 crappie

All that and I've only used 5 of the lures I got so far. The only lure I used and didn't land a fish was a Thunderbug that a small musky broke off. The Little Wolf spoon has been fantastic for me. Never used spoons much but tried it out and caught fish on the first 3 casts. Don't sleep on the grab bags. Wouldn't have known how great the Little Wolf is if I didn't get it in the grab bag.

All my fishing friends keep trying to push me on other lures but I think the results prove what my father always said "Mepps is the best". Looking forward to losing enough of my new lures so I can justify another 150 dollar order.

Riley – Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania

Lure: Bronze Slammer

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth

Decided to try one of these out when I got sick of burning through small swimbaits. These in current are great and run true with minimal to no line twists without a swivel from my experience. I noticed my average size for smallies increased once I started chucking this around. This is a high quality product and is a juiced up version of the spinners we grew up using.

Bert Thielman – Bleachers Pond Fall River, Massachusetts

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Pickerel - Catfish, Bullhead (brown, yellow & black)

I have many Mepps lures. When the bite is tough, tie on a Mepps. I use them in cold water up here in the northeast and they don't disappoint. Mepps are great multi species lures, and you can slow roll them or burn them it doesn't matter, there will be a fish on the other end.

Robert J Phillips – Little Darby Creek, Columbus Ohio, Ohio

Lure: Bronze Slammer

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth

Ran a #4 thru a local creek and landed a 3 lbs creek smallmouth.

Mark Baumbach – Lake Geneva Wisconsin, Wisconsin

Lure: Aglia Long

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (White) - Perch, White - Walleye

I fish the Mepps Aglia Long in the #0,1 and 2 blade sizes. These lures absolutely put fish in the boat. They will catch anything!! Primarily fishing for bass, walleye and panfish, this is my go to lure. I usually have 2 rods rigged with an Aglia Long with different blades. One of them is going to work. I fish a lot, and can't recommend these enough!!

Ken Wagner – Turtle Flambeau Flowage, Wisconsin

Lure: Bronze Slammer

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Pike, Northern

These lure is hot

Paul Evon – Bad River, St. Charles Michigan, Michigan

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (White) - Perch, Yellow - Pike, Northern - Catfish, Bullhead (brown, yellow & black)

I have had nothing but the best of luck with the Mepps plain Aglia spinners (# 1, 2, 3)
I like spinners because I have more control of their depth and they do not sink very far down.I have caught bullhead and panfish, all types of bass and the mighty Northern Pike. My guess is that spinners mimmick insects so that would attract just about any species of fish. I have the best luck with the red and white blades. I have over $200 of lures in my tackle box but I only use Mepps spinners 95% of the time. I am a Mepps fan for life.....

Jimmy L – Lake Gananoque, Canada, Ontario , Canada

Lure: Bronze Slammer

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth

Back to Back to Back smallies crushed this lure. The bronze backs can’t resist. First cast was a 4 pounder and they only got bigger!

Steve Eckstein – Lake Erie Tribs, Ohio

Lure: Bronze Slammer

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Catfish, Channel - Pike, Northern

I have used Mepps products for years. All of them catch fish. But these bronze slammers... Wow. The size difference is very clear. Make more of these!

Paul S Evon – Saginaw, MI, Michigan

Lure: USA Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (Black) - Pike, Northern - Sunfish (shellcracker) - Catfish, Bullhead (brown, yellow & black)

I have been using the plain Aglia gold/red/white #1 spinner and it has produced fantastic results. I have never had so much luck in my fishing career. The amount of fish I have caught with it has paid for itself. I was using #1 Aglia to catch the smaller fish but I have been hooking on to 20 plus inch Northern Pike and smallmouth bass. I plan on getting the same lure in #2 and #3 sizes. I plan on using nothing but Mepps spinners from now on!

Thomas Craig – Snake River, Above Lower Granite Dam, Washington

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Smallmouth

The last week of October, my daughter & I fished for bass and I caught a 15 inch and a 13 inch small mouth. The temperature was in the 40's and we were cold and left after a couple of hours, but we used noodle rods and Aglia #3 Silver Mepps. Noodle rods are great because even an eight inch bass feels like a big fish and a 15 incher is a real fighter.

Tim Fox – Yellowstone Nat’l Park And All Over MN & WI, Wisconsin

Lure: Trout Pocket Pac - #0 Aglia Wooly Worm

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (Black) - Crappie (White) - Perch, Yellow - Pike, Northern - Trout, Brook - Trout, Brown - Trout, Cutthroat - Trout, Rainbow - Walleye

This trio is extremely effective for a diverse range of fresh water fish. I’ve recently caught multi species of trout in Yellowstone NP with these in size 0 and 1. Black Fury also effective. Prefer single hook for a variety of reasons. A great Go To lure of mine for many decades…especially for shore, wader, canoe/kayak fishing rivers, streams, creeks, ponds, and small lakes. One lure I know I can always toss with confidence! (Use thin, lite, line…4-6’ish.)

Melissa Creekmur – Pond, Kentucky

Lure: Aglia & Dressed Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Rock - Bass, Smallmouth - Bass, Striped - Bass, White - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Carp - Catfish, Blue - Crappie (White) - Perch, Yellow

I am a 45 year old woman I have been fishing since I was 3 years old. First started with my grandfather. He had always used nothing but Mepps spinners. So I followed in his foot steps. I try new lures on occasion but have found its a waste of time for me. I will only use Mepps to catch the fish!!! They are the best!!

Jim – Chippewa National Forest, Minnesota

Lure: Piker Kit - Dressed #5 Aglia Assortment

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Rock - Bass, Smallmouth - Bluegill (Bream, Brim) - Crappie (Black) - Musky - Perch, Yellow - Pike, Northern - Sunfish (shellcracker)

I have used this as a Go To Lure for over 30 plus years.
Guaranteed you will catch fish with this lure, especially with the Silver & Gold plate lures.

Martin Samelson – Lily Pond, New Gloucester, Maine, Maine

Lure: Comet Combo

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth

Mepps has made me into a spinnerbait fan with the #3 Comet Combo. This morning at 8am I paddled my kayak along the western side of Lily Pond, made a cast using the chartreuse Mister Twister that came with the Comet. I thought the cast up was too close to the shore but I reeled it back slowly anyway, and "wham," a nice 1 lb. largemouth hooked up. Over the years I've thrown a Mepps occasionally but now I'm convinced.

Did I mention this is the second time the Mepps Comet with a Mister Twister / chartreuse has delivered?

What are you guys gonna due next?

Lure: Musky Killer Bait Series

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Musky - Pike, Northern - Walleye

In my opinion the Mepps Musky Killer is the most versatile multispecies fishing lure you can pitch. It is a perfect size allowing you to catch a multitude of different species.

While casting the Mepps Musky Killer Bait Series in Walleye color I was able to catch a Musky 40”, Pike 34” Smallmouth Bass 21” & Walleye 24.5” all on the same lake, in the same day on the same bait within 4 hrs of getting on to the water @ sunrise.

Do yourself a favor and try some of the new Mepps Musky Killer Bait Series color schemes. You won’t regret it!

Lure: Double Blade Aglia

Fish Caught: Bass, Largemouth - Bass, Smallmouth - Bass, White - Catfish, Channel - Pike, Northern

I'm just honestly thankful these products exist. Just had one of my best days ever trying out new Double Bladed Mepps spoon/spinner, absolutely killed the largemouth. Caught some pike, small mouth and a totally unintentional channel catfish. Just turned my buddy onto these too, he wasn't having any bites and after I reeled 3 in he walked over and went through my bag for one and started landing them. Made for some awesome photos and an awesome day. Can't say enough good things about Mepps products without sounding like I'm getting paid to write this. When the fishing gets tough, I'll always carry a Mepps spoon/spinner and slap it on and can almost guarantee something. Mepps Aglia 5 treble hook single/double blades will get just about anythings attention and get you on some fish. Great lures.
